swamp studies, 2021

These oil studies were created at Merganser Pond on Saltspring Island. During a time of immobility and slowness this durational painting practice focused my physical exploration to a square kilometer. These studies, often produced in the dusk on walks around the swamp, led me to think about the regenerative/degenerative potential of stagnancy and decay. These paintings were exercises in slowness and reflection, where the creative process was mirrored in the effort to capture trees and branches reflected in still water.
